Urban Design and Urban Development are applied fields. To compensate for an ambiguous set of underlying theories, this area of expertise is best understood over time and when done as real-world projects. The purpose of this class is to expose students to what really happens in complex urban development projects. This will help them strike better balances between being aspirational and pragmatic when working in practice.

This course will contain full chronologies of how urban development projects began, matured and were executed. Prof. Jain will draw upon his 30-year international experience to describe in detail actual projects covering a range of geographies and scales. The course’s objective is to help students understand the complex pushes and pulls that make good urban outcomes so hard to achieve.
