PRODUCTIVE CITIES – GREEN URBANITIES?

Andreas Brück
Fachgebiet Städtebau und Siedlungswesen

We want to discuss economic and ecological factors in urban development today, and speculate on future cities and the role of existing as well as entirely new forms of urban production (industrial, agricultural, craft, etc.); and explore the connection between new forms of urban production and the potential gestalt and urban design of tomorrows productive places. Therein, we will deal with the paradigm of the mixed city and investigate today’s and tomorrow’s possibilities of integrating productive uses into neighbourhoods – bridging former misalliances of working and living. While industrial scale urban farming, aquaponics and other means of food production in cities have the potential to change the way our urbanities look towards a more ecological or “green” urban production; new possibilities of energy production, waste-recycling, a new (digitally enhanced) craftsmanship and other factors play into different facets of a new (circular) urban economy.
